NST: Parents encouraged to report school activities during El Nino heat

SEREMBAN: Parents can lodge complaints to the Public Complaints Management System if schools hold outside activities during the El Nino phenomena and the temperature rises beyond 35 degrees Celsius.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said her ministry had issued guidelines stating that any outdoor activities should be conducted if the temperature reached 35 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days.

"These guidelines must be followed, and at the same time, we also refer to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and the Health Ministry from time to time.

"It is aimed at obtaining guidance on this weather issue (El Nino). These guidelines must indeed be complied with by schools.

"However, if there are formal complaints from parents, I request for them to be extended to the Public Complaints Management System (SISPAA) to enable action to be taken," she said, officiating a school camp programme at Klana Resort, here, tonight.

Fadhlina was commenting on information circulating on social media regarding complaints from parents alleging that a school in Terengganu planned to conduct a cross-country marathon this week.

However, the Terengganu education department has reminded all schools not to conduct any outdoor activities during this time.

Fadhlina said that so far, her ministry had not received complaints from any party, especially parents, regarding the matter.

"We welcome any complaints and will conduct investigations whether they are justified or not," she said.

She said the Education Ministry has no issue about continuing to postpone any outdoor activities if the El Nino phenomenon currently affecting the country persists.

"The ministry will continue to collaborate with the Health Ministry to monitor weather conditions and the health status of students," she said.
