Today in Almaty
Today in Almaty, I am honoured to meet with H.E. Satybaldy Darkhan Amangeldiuly, Mayor of Almaty City, and Smagulov Olzhas Mukhtarovich, Deputy Mayor of Almaty City.
In our discussion, I shared my experience of touring Almaty upon arrival, including a visit to Shymbulak. I was mesmerised by the majestic Tian Shan mountain range, a natural beauty that truly reflects the charm and vibrancy of Almaty.
Our meeting also reaffirmed the importance of strengthening ties between Selangor and Almaty, with opportunities for collaboration in economy and investment by fostering trade and industrial as well as technology-driven development. We also exchanged ideas on smart urban development from sustainable mobility and city management to renewable energy and explored prospects in culture, education, and tourism.
The Mayor also shared about Kazakhstan’s growing interest in railway development, an area where both our regions can exchange knowledge and expertise, particularly in building efficient and sustainable transportation systems.
I also note that the direct flight between Kuala Lumpur and Almaty now operates five times a week, boosting connectivity and tourism. This has contributed to a remarkable growth in visitors, with arrivals from Malaysia to Kazakhstan increasing over fivefold in 2024 compared to the previous year.
This dialogue marks the beginning of a stronger friendship and cooperation between Selangor and Almaty, built on shared aspirations for progress, sustainability, and mutual prosperity.
